Latymer-Upper-School-bespoke lockers and changing room benches

The client

Latymer Upper School is London’s leading fully co-educational school, with 1,200 boys and girls (aged from 11-18) and is focused on nurturing both the academic achievement and the personal development of each and every pupil. To ensure that their students were exposed to as many opportunities as possible, the school underwent  the construction of a new three-storey sports centre extension to the existing facility which provided a new 25 metre 6 lane swimming pool with automated moving floor, dance and fitness studios, wet and dry changing facilities, WC’s, stores and offices.

Joinery requirements

We collaborated on the project requirements with our sister company and were responsible for supplying the poolside, studio and gym perimeter benching the project.

When choosing the materials for the bench units the joinery needed to take the pools humidity into consideration, and therefore opted for a high-grade oak with a durable finish, that is resistant to both temperate changes and moisture. the client also specified that if there were any natural knots in the timber that they had to be less than 5mm in diameter.

The results

For the studio and gym perimeter benching, Falkus Joinery was able to choose a finer quality timber with a rich knot selection, and so selected a quarter-sawn European oak, sourced from Italy. The constructed benches were finished using a highly resistant clear polyurethane finish. The base and first coat were carried out in the factory with the final coats being applied once installed.
