Due to the nature of the school, the requirement was for the joinery to be warm and un-intrusive, but also hard wearing. To achieve this result FJL used simple finishes and materials such as birch ply and veneered MDF panels made up to represent birch ply.
To achieve this 15mm MDF was edged with birch ply and veneered with maple. This gave the impression of a birch ply panel but allowed FJL to make doors that exceeded 2.4m, closing off storage and achieving the long grain pattern the school wanted.
