Falkus Joinery Ltd was commissioned to build and install a seven-metre-long coffee counter and two individual storage units in the St Nicholas Cole Abbey [St Nicks], Distaff Lane, directly south of St Paul’s Cathedral.
The counter and the storage units were manufactured using more traditional methods of joinery from various materials such as French oak, wenge, maple, oak veneered birch ply and white Corian. It was designed by Brendan Sexton.
It was key to the brief that the counter and the storage units appeared to be manufactured from a continuous piece of oak in each case. To achieve this Falkus used French Oak, which offers more control over the size and cut off the staves [strips of wood used to form solid piece], and also ran the grain horizontally. This was matched on the doors and sides of the all the units.
